Return of Free Fire in India- connections with MS Dhoni

India’s one of the most popular and most played battle royal game- Garena Free Fire is back in India. Children and even grown ups often used to be seen playing this game few years back.

   It has already been one and half year since it was banned in India. The game was banned last year in February 2022, along with 53 other mobile applications. The step was taken by the Indian Government due to national security concerns.

   Before it was banned, Free Fire enjoyed significant popularity in India with around 40 million monthly active users. It was a close competitor to Krafton’s PUBG and BGMI, which are also immensely popular in the country. India’s ban on Free Fire immediately wiped $16 billion off Sea’s market cap last year.

   Free Fire once used to give great competition to Krafton’s PUBG (Player Unknown Battle Ground), which was also banned due to security issues but soon introduced with a new name especially for India as BGMI.

Following their footsteps, Garena once again is all set to relaunch their online gaming application Free Fire in India. It has been scheduled to be available for download officially from 5 September onwards from Google PlayStore while the pre-registration has started now.

   “Garena“- the Singaporean game developer company owned by “Sea Limited” is all set to relaunch their much loved project Freefire in India again with more safety and security features. They have partenered with Yotta– a financial technology company owned by Hiranandani Group for cloud and other storage needs of local user’s data in the country, which will be a major change this time.

   “We look forward to providing an engaging and highly localised experience for Indian users,” said Gang Ye, co-founder of Garena, in a statement. “We believe our partnership with Yotta will ensure that our users can enjoy the highest quality gameplay experience and benefit from Yotta’s expertise in protecting and securing Indian user data.”

   Moreover the company also said that they localize the Free Fire for indian market— incorporating “unique content” and creating an environment that “encourages a safe, healthy and fun gameplay experience” to the users and will make the titular game available in the country on September 5, 2023. Free Fire India users will be encouraged to take breaks after certain intervals, the company said.

   Several player friendly features introduced in the game that includes- verification system to enable parental supervision, gameplay limitations and Take a break reminders for balanced gaming activity.

Who is Free Fire brand ambassador?

   During the press conference, the officials of the Garena has announced the Cricket legend Mahendra Singh Dhoni as the game’s new brand ambassador for India.

   Moreover a new playable character inspired by MS Dhoni will also be introduced in the game. The character’s name in the game will be “Thala” which is often used to point MS Dhoni in real life by his followers. And with this he will become the first ever Indian sportsperson to be featured in this game.

   Before MS Dhoni, the famous football player Christiano Ronaldo was also featured in this game as a playable character under the name “Chrono“. He was the global brand ambassador for this game earlier.

   Along with MS Dhoni, several other Indian sportsperson are joining the Freefire India lineup. These are Indian football team’s captain Sunil Chhetri, Badminton champion Saina Nehwal, Tennis legend Leander Paes and Kabbadi champion Rahul Chaudhary.
